Since then, the Task Force had three other meetings:, one in Washington D.C in May 2018, the next in Copenhagen in September 2018, and the last in Reykjavik in December 2018. The participants of the meetings were the delegates from the Arctic states, Permanent Participants (PPs), Arctic Council Working Groups (WGs) and Observers.Item Task Force on Improved Connectivity in the Arctic, Reykjavik 11-12 December 2018 Draft summary submitted by co-chairs(Arctic Council Secretariat, 2019-05) Task Force on Improved Connectivity in the Arctic (TFICA)Marjukka Vihavainen-Pitkänen (FI) and Freja Lisby Nielsen (KoD) co-chaired the fourth meeting of the Task Force on Improving Connectivity in the Arctic (TFICA). The meeting was held at Nordens Hus in Reykjavik. In total, 23 participants attended the meeting including all Arctic States, the Aleut International Association (AIA) and the Emergency Prevention Preparedness and Response Working Group (EPPR). Two Observers attended the meeting: Germany and Italy. The Arctic Council Secretariat provided secretarial support.Item Task Force on Improved Connectivity in the Arctic (TFICA) Draft Report(Arctic Council Secretariat, 2019-05) Task Force on Improved Connectivity in the Arctic (TFICA)At the Arctic Council 2017 Ministerial meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska, the Ministers established the Task Force on Improved Connectivity in the Arctic (TFICA) and gave it a mandate to compare the needs of those who live, operate, and work in the Arctic with available infrastructure, and to work with the telecommunications industry and the Arctic Economic Council to encourage the creation of the required infrastructure with an eye toward pan-Arctic solutions and to report to Ministers in 2019.1. As the Arctic is opening up, modern connectivity will underpin economic growth, and allow for the delivery of better services to Arctic peoples. By commissioning this report, Arctic states have delivered a strong message that further improvements to connectivity are needed. This work builds upon member states’ commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) to strive towards providing “universal and affordable access,” in order to help achieve sustainable development and to empower communities.Item Connectivity in the Arctic Discussion paper(Arctic Council Secretariat, 2018-11) Task Force on Improved Connectivity in the Arctic (TFICA)The Task Force on Improved Connectivity (TFICA) started its work in Helsinki in November 2017, where the Task Force held its first meeting.
